September 2, 2010 Active Chilled Beam Systems Dinner Meeting & Presentation
Designing Active Chilled Beam Systems for Occupant Thermal Comfort Our presentation will review the basic operational concepts of active chilled beams for the maintenance of occupant thermal comfort. We will focus on the selection and location of beams to provide acceptable levels of occupant comfort as outlined in ASHRAE Standard 55 and ASHRAE Standard 62.1. Active beams can provide comfort conditions and consume less energy than conventional systems if they are controlled and operated correctly. They can provide temperature control and required ventilation air without the possibility of condensation. Peter Simmonds has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and another in Research and Development from Reading Technical College, a Masters degree from HTS, Den Bosch, The Netherlands, and a Ph.D. from T.U. Delft. He has been a member of ASHRAE since 1989. Dr. Simmonds became involved in radiant heating and cooling design in the late 1970’s and began working with chilled beam design in the mid-1980’s. After working in The Netherlands for many years, he joined Flack & Kurtz in New York City in 1994. His major projects include the New Bangkok Airport, Akron Art Museum, Los Angeles Federal Courthouse and the New Academic Building of Cooper Union in New York. He has received the Carter Bronze Medal from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers in 1993. He has authored or co-authored more than 60 technical papers, articles and books. He is a member of several ASHRAE Technical Committees, serves as chair of the “Physiology and Human Environment” committee, and is a Fellow of ASHRAE. Dr. Simmonds also teaches Graduate and Post Graduate Architectural students at the Southern California Institute for Architects in Los Angeles.
